Spanish Club

About the Spanish Club:

Spanish Club helps those with even an introductory-level background in Spanish gain more confidence in speaking Medical Spanish.

Before each meeting, attendees are emailed vocabulary lists. These are reviewed at the start of each session. Then, we move through case-based scenarios, based on the vocabulary list just reviewed. In the past academic year, we covered various organ systems and their appropriate Spanish vocabulary: neurology, GI, GU, OB-GYNE, Orthopedics.

The group meets every other month for dinner at a Latin-themed restaurant in either Chicago or the surrounding suburbs. This out-of-hospital/evening format allows for a more casual environment for residents and attendings to interact. As the evening goes on, in fact, Spanish Club meetings are known to get quite lively. “Viva la pachanga!” is our informal motto.

The attendings like getting to know the residents in this informal format; the residents like to laugh at the attendings as they make mistakes (the only time this is tolerated ;) ). These meetings are a highlight of the residency!
